Year in Review

Another year is over. Where do the days, weeks and months go? For me, 2013 flew. But I think that's the sign of a good year. Here are my 12 highlights of 2013.

January: What better way to start the year than in the Mile High City for the National Western?! Love the people, cattle and atmosphere. Only a few more weeks and we'll be back in Denver for the 2014 NWSS.
February: My godson, Isaac, said my name. And I've answered to "Cole" or "NA-Cole" ever since.

 Looking forward to spoiling another niece or nephew in February 2014.



March: I got a taste of my true Irish heritage when my GREAT Aunt Sally from Virginia came home for St. Patrick's Day. We also celebrated Aunt Sally and Uncle Ralph's birthdays (88 and 90). I captured a YouTube worthy video of the Hurley birthday song.
April: The ground thawed and we saw green grass. Thank GOD.
May: A trip to Kansas City for Cinco de Mayo and watching the Kentucky Derby in the Power & Light District. Which meant one thing... drinking mint juleps out of margarita glasses. KC for the Derby? It was cheaper and we got to visit my sister.

June: Was able to cross off New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine from states I've visited. Had a blast at Logan and Marissa's wedding in New Hampshire and I've decided to save up for a vacation home in Maine. (You'll find there was a wedding theme in 2013:))

July: To Kansas City again, this time for the Hereford Junior National and conveniently another trip to the Power & Light District. 
August: A college/cattle friend's wedding in Indiana. So happy we were there to celebrate with Cody & Lindsay and get to see so many of my favorite people in one spot!

September: A sad month as Grandma Starr passed away. But we're so lucky to have had her in our lives for so long. Good memories that will be cherish forever.
October: Christa & Aaron's wedding, a 2013 highlight! So blessed I was able to stand next to Christa on her big day. Plus seeing so many high school friends brought back sweet memories.

November: A quick trip to Louisville for the NAILE to help celebrate my college professor and family friend be inducted into Saddle and Sirloin portrait hanging.
December: Here we are. Another year closing and excited to see what 2014 brings.

Honoring lifetime accomplishments

A delayed post that has been on my list of things to do for weeks, a month to be exact! About a month ago, my parents and I hopped in the car and drove about 8 hours down to Louisville for the NAILE. Driving time was about 18 hours and we were there for less then 24, just a typical weekend for the Starr Family, really. But what we went down for we wouldn't have missed for anything. My professor at Michigan State and most importantly a family cattle friend, was inducted to the Saddle & Sirloin portrait gallery. Dr. Hawkins is one heck of guy that has impacted the lives of not only cattle breeders but students. He has a heck of a list of accomplishments that would be put any FFA Proficiency application or 4-H Record Book to shame. What was cool is that my family and I knew him well long before I made the decision to be a Spartan. Now how many of your professors were your parents friends with? It's rare, but just proves the type of people the cattle industry is blessed to have. I feel blessed to be called one of Dr. Hawkin's former students. I have good memories of sitting in his classroom listening him speak on beef management and livestock merchandise. But the memories I will cherish forever are talking about the calves being sold in the Fall Fest Sale, who I bred my last MSU show heifer to and doing Hawkin's chores while he and his wife, Kathleen were away. It's not very often that you can connect with one of your professors on such a personal level and still share a common bond after graduation.
Last summer, I was fortunate enough to be a part of group that shared how Dr. Hawkins impacted our lives and careers. I'll let the video do the rest of the talking.

InstaLife

Hard to believe we're already breezing through April, where did March go? I want to relive St. Patty's Day and Easter because A) who doesn't love celebrating their Irish heritage and B) Easter candy is the best. Yes, it trumps Christmas candy (however not my Dad's chocolates).
So I thought I'd share with you a few of the highlights captured through Instagram. If you're on it, follow me @starrnicole
Here we go...

We kicked off the month with a trip to Lancaster, WI to sell one of our bulls. Pretty sure that he went to a good home and even better was we go our money! It was a busy, but entertaining weekend with my nephew Isaac. I learned that I'm in no way shape or form ready to be a parent that takes kids to cattle events. How do people my age do it? By Sunday I was exhausted, my back was killing me and I was in desperate need of a bottle of wine.

My GREAT Aunt Sally from Virgina was home for a whole week. We had a huge get together and celebrated these two younging's birthdays, it was a wild bash. Aunt Sally turned 88 and Uncle Ralph hit 90.

 Continuing on with the green... the Spartans. They had a good run at it, but bummed to see them lose to Duke. I filled out a bracket but didn't put any money down. Wishin' I would have now, I have Louisville and Syracuse going to the Championship, with Louisville winning. Guess I'll know if I was right after the final four this weekend.

March brought lots of cow watching. We have a few cute little Hereford babies on the ground. We are so ready for the snow to melt. It's a tundra! Can't complain too much, we need the moisture.

I had Isaac for a whole weekend. To myself. The weekend before Easter. So what does the world's best Aunt do? Take him to see the Easter bunny. As you can see there's no reason to stand in the long lines at the mall to sit on Santa or the Easter bunny's lap. He was less than impressed and never even make eye contact. I'm sure he'll appreciate this photo someday.

And lastly, my Easter bunny rocks! She brought me wine to-go in a screw off! LOVE it. And sipping my first glass now.

A Valentine Drink

Red Beer

You all know I'm a red wine drinker. Rain, Snow, Sunny, 40 below or a 105*- Nothing puts me in a better place than a glass of red wine after a long day in the office or out in the barn. Luckily this week I'm on a work trip in California, where I'm getting my grape intake in the form of liquid. But I also have another favorite drink that fits in with the Valentine color scheme, it's called Red Beer. It can be enjoyed anytime of the year, but I only have it during Denver. I think of it as the National Western Stock Show signature drink. I thought I'd share in case your Valentine isn't a wine drinker, this may be a festive drink you could mix up before heading out for tomorrow's Valentine dinner reservation. So what is it? Red beer is a cross between a beer and a Bloody Mary. I think it's about 3/4 beer (Bud or Coors) and 1/4 Bloody Mary mix, topped with all the fixings. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Top with Tabasco sauce, a little pepper, olives, whatever you'd like and enjoy.

When putting back a red beer back at the National Western, it's not served in a nice glass like the one above. We're normal people that like to have fun at a cattle show. We drink out of red solo cups! But maybe for tomorrow you want to be a little fancier, it's Valentine's Day after all. Maybe mason jar glasses are more your style.

Calf Watch 2013

The new calf crop will be starting to hit the straw at the Starr Farm. Last weekend when I was home where were quite a few that looked close to calving and one that was over due. Like people, she looked uncomfortable and ready to have her baby. When cows are approaching their due date, we bring them up to the barn from the pasture to the back of the barn a.k.a. "waiting area". This way we can keep a close eye on them. And when they're really close to calving, the cow is moved up into a pen that has fresh straw bedding. This much would be much like a delivery room at the hospital:). We do this to prevent the calves from being born outside and getting frost bitten ears.

Hanging out in the waiting area last weekend was my old show heifer Appi from college. Appi did really well in the ring, in Denver she was a Division Champion. Here is her glamour shot at the backdrop after she won. This day started early (like 3am early) and was filled with a lot of hard work but as you can see it paid off. The adrenalin running through our bodies kept us going and put the smiles on our faces.

Funny how we all change in just five years. Of course the calf is the most important thing to look at, but my eye tend to wonder to my hairstyle and clothes.Yep, I'm a girl:)

 Since then Appi has hung up the show halter and has been put to work in the pasture. She's raised a lot of good calves that we have been able to sell. She's kinda like me, a grown up with responsibilities. Except our responsibilities are different; mine are in an office, hers are raising a calf! Appi has taken up residency in the "waiting room" and the waiting game is on! Bull or heifer no one knows. Beauty Chat

Even though farm girls spend a majority of our time outside working, we still want to look good. Even if it doesn't involve putting on putting on makeup everyday (or weekends in my case), a good moisturizer is always a necessity whether it's the 40 below in the gusty wind or 100 degrees in the hot sun. For me, protecting my skin is important, I'm pushing 25 and have no time for crows feet.
Going fun places like into the office, out with friends or cattle shows like the National Western Stock Show give me a good excuse to beautify.
I always like having a variety of makeup to chose from. Why wear the same thing everyday? I've always have the best luck with using a consistent foundation and powder, but beyond that I'm game for options. Especially when it comes to my eyes. A few weeks ago I restocked my makeup (ok got an initial start at restocking) and new brushes due to an unplanned incidence earlier this year. I don't know about you but I hop from counter to counter, oohing and aahhinng, grazing over all the products. Applying eye colors to the top of my hand until my its completely covered with colorful, powdery streaks. It was overwhelming and I'm sure the lovely, well-put-together ladies we annoyed at my indecisiveness. I got over that feeling quickly....it was a Monday night, they had nothing better to do than give me their undivided attention.

I'm not a loyal customer. To just one counter that is. This time I went with brushes (hopefully something I won't have to buy again for a long time), mascara and eyeliner from MAC. I did get a MAC freebie... when you return six empty product containers you get a lipstick of your choice. The plastic containers are melted down and used for playground equipment. Always feel good about spending money when it involves helping the children:) That's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it. And finally hit up the Lancome counter for eyeshadow.

What brand of makeup do you use? I know there are some Clinique and Mary Kay gals out there too. I'd love to hear what product you can't live without!

Cowboy Boot Decor

Before buying a pair of boots I always examine the design of boot top. I love tops that are brightly colored and have a one of kind designs. You can see my latest pair here, I am so glad I made this purchase last summer. Why does it matter what the top of the boot looks like, it's not like anyone sees this part? I guess it's just reassurance they look good just in case anyone would happen to see them. Kinda like not being able to leave the house unless you're wearing match bra and undies:)
At the National Western Stock Show I found out why it is important to buy boots only with good-lookin' tops. When your boots have been seen better days and resoling is no longer an option, cut off the tops and turn them into a mirror frame.

Maybe you have kids that growing likes weeds and you can't stand to part with giving away their first real pair of cowboy boots. This would be a great way to display them. I've also heard of people planting flowers in their old boots. What uses have you found for worn out boots?

National Western Stock Show 2013

Annual Trip to the Mile High City

On the couch, surrounded by balls of waded up kleenex, sucking on cough drops and trying to chug down a glass of orange juice. To most this is a terrible way to spend a Tuesday evening (missing boot camp), but for me it's the sign of a good trip to Denver for the National Western Stock Show. For the most part this has been an annual trip for my family. Even though we weren't all there at the same time, my Genex sister was there before us and my CHB sister was there at the tail end. It's my favorite time of year. I love catching up with friends who I may only see once or twice a year. And it's always funny the unplanned people you bump into and get to visit with. And the reason for the trip...there's nothing more exciting than two days of cattle shows and looking at high quality cattle. I'm not quite sure these pictures are exactly worth a 1,000 words better (excuse my Droid), but they do a better job of telling the story. 

First off let me just say, this is a hard trip to pack for. Earlier last week it was 6*F.
We lucked out, the weather was gorgeous and sunny, temps even peaked int he 50's. TAKE ME BACK!
 

Since it was so nice out, I took a walk on the catwalk to see everything down in the yards. This is the back end of the yards. I wish I could look at those Rockies everyday.
 

From the sounds of it there was a steady stream of people in the yards. In the yards are where the pen and carload shows takes place. Herd bulls are on display is "Herd Sire Alley". A new blogger, Next Generation Genetics, shares the history of the yards in a recent post. Check it out and start following her blog too!

 

Changing things up a bit this year was the new location of the Mile High Night Sale, (National Hereford Sale). In the past we were all crammed into the beef palace in a hotter the heck sale arena. This new venue change was for the better. This is also were the cattle shows on the hill take place. The place was packed and it was a great way to showcase the breed. There were even a lot of people outside of the breed there to check it out and get in on the action.    

A good bookend to my first picture. Why do rental cars have the smallest trunks? We got to give a good friend from Oklahoma a ride to the airport. Thank you Keysto for your muscles, packing skills and entertainment.

Well there it is. I've only missed pictures of two things.... the cattle show (which took place in the ring where the sale was held) and my ultimate favorite place to eat Texas de Brazil. It's a once a year kinda place to eat at. But if you ever get the chance to eat at a Brazilian steakhouse... DO IT. I'm not sure if it's the food or the people I get to enjoy it with that I like best.

Baby Shower & Cattle Shows

They go together, right?

We like our cows. We like going to shows. But we are also regular ladies that like to ooh and awe over cute baby things. Why not combine the two? Last weekend at the World Beef Expo in Milwaukee we had a fun girls afternoon at the end of the barn and set up a baby shower. A bunch of ladies drinking wine (except for the mom-to-be) and looking at cute baby girl clothes. If you were there and wondering who all the clacking women were, yes, that was us:) It's hard to get everyone together, so we figured a baby shower at a cattle show (where we all already were) would be a fine place.

Not the best picture, but I had to post. Instead of regular cake, cake pops were served. Fun cake balls on a stick and my oh my, soo good. If you're needing some in the Milwaukee area, I recommend Haute Pops by Kate. She was great to work with and even delivered to the Wisconsin State Fair grounds. Now that's service!

A baby shower at a show may sound odd to most, but to us was perfectly normal. We were with some of our best friends, young and old, who have either helped raise us or we've grown up together.

Wisconsin State Fair

Going to the WI State Fair has been a family tradition of ours for many years, in fact my parents even met at the State Fair. My dad was ask to fit cattle for my mom's family and the rest was history! In fact, my parents are even celebrating their anniversary tomorrow. This state fair however was like unlike any of the other I've attended, there was lots of excitement happening in the Hereford stalls on Friday.

My long time friend (and when I say long time I mean our parents showed together, the kids showed together as kids and now we're adults) proposed to his girlfriend of 5 years on the Sky Glide. It's been there tradition to ride this every year! Talk about having a good story to tell about how you got engaged! Friday was such a long day, several of us knew about it! Those secrets are had to keep!

My Kansas City sister was home and got to show her heifer, the real reason we were at the fair! We did OK, this year we were going just to have fun! Mission accomplished.

You're never too old to ride a slide at the state fair! Best (and only) thing you can do for $2. And yes, that's my dad in the lead!

Last weekend we got to know a new family that shows Angus cattle from IL, the Brooks from IL. They were stalled across from us in the barn. We had lots of fun getting to know their two girls. We also spent alot of time drinking sweet tea vodka. And Facebook doesn't lie...Starr Sisters were voted for having the best state fair drink, what an accomplishment!

Friday Flair: NWSS Shopping

A one-of-a-kind find

A few days ago I eluded to the shopping at the National Western Stock Show. While the number one reason we attend the stock show is for our cattle and to interact with other breeders from around the country and Canda, us girls also like to sneak away for a little retail therapy. After all, just because we are working hard, doesn't mean we can't look good while doing so! On The Hill above where the show cattle are stalled and the showing takes place is a shopping/tradeshow area. This shopping level has everything from the latest Ford vehicles, western belt buckles & turquoise jewelry, western clothes, furs and furniture. Even a few eating joints in between. You name it it's there! Below was my NWSS purchase, yes it's unique and one-of-a-kind! Literally! I found this little shop that makes these sweatshirts, and all of them were different! Thank God... I'll never have to run into someone with the same sweatshirt as me! I'll admit it's different and the average person wouldn't wear it, but let's be serious I don't consider myself average! This style fits my brand, and I'm sporting it today! No matter how many people made fun of me for this "different" purchase! Have a great weekend!

Denver Stock Show

A Recap

Yesterday I gave a teaser about my trip to Denver for the National Western Stock Show. Each January the NWSS is held in Denver, CO for approximately 16 days. Cattlemen from throughout the country and Canada come to exhibit cattle on The Hill and in The Yards. The NWSS is home to the only pen and carload show, which takes place in The Yards. Also in The yards you’ll find bulls on display and cattle industry related companies, set up as an outside tradeshow. The Hill consists of your show bulls and heifers in the open & junior shows. (PS-above the cattle stalls you’ll also find excellent shopping ;) This big facility overlooks the Rocky Mountains, gorgeous scenery!


My family has been fortunate to have cattle purchased from Michigan State University, MSU have then been nice to bring the heifers via truck and trailer to the show (it’s a long haul from Michigan!). The MSU Purebred Beef Barn brought ten head to Denver to be exhibited on The Hill. The guys loaded up the livestock and their feed in two trailers and set out for the trip on January 3rd, they didn’t get home till early yesterday morning! Long trip and if you’re a lady reading this you’re probably thinking about all the clothes that needed to be packed! Don’t worry… when I used to go with MSU I usually took the prize for having the most luggage, just because we’re farm girls doesn’t mean we can’t look good!

Due my big girl job I didn’t fly out to the stock show till last Wednesday but am fortunate to have spent 5 days in the Rocky Mountains to look over all the display bulls and bull & heifer pens in The Yards and the show cattle on The Hill.

My family was very happy with how everything went in the ring. The MSU heifer calf that was a Division Champion at the NAILE ended up winner her class. We were very pleased and are looking forward to seeing her grow. My sister, Danielle, will be showing her and Miley’s calf this upcoming summer.

One NWSS tradition is to go out to eat at Texas de Brazil, a Brazilian Steakhouse where servers come around with different platters of meat. Guests are given a card (one side green, the other red), green means serves me, red means I’m full! While I’m always way too full after the delicious salad bar and meat I still manage to have room for the Brazilian cheesecake…. I mean honestly what’s a few more hundred calories?! If you’re gonna go, might as well go all out!

Besides watching the cattle show it was great to catch up with old friends. Even though we don’t see each other as often as we’d like it’s still nice knowing we’re all just a plane ride or phone call away! I really think it’s the friends I’ve made over the many years of showing that has kept me interested in the cattle business. I’ve met and become close with amazing people, and wouldn’t trade that for any other lifestyle!

Excitement from my cubicle

Well for those of you who tuned in yesterday morning to the North American International Livestock Exposition, saw that our heifer MSU Rachel won Champion in her division! That means that our heifer was the best in her age division. She was in one of the younger age divisions, so when she went in for overall the judge decided to go with an old female, perfectly understandable. And the judge picked a good heifer.. owned by my friends, Karey & Katlyn Howes from Maryland won! Congrats ladies!!
Words can not say how excited I was watching the show at my desk and cheering only to get funny faces from my coworkers:)
What's even better is the numerous text messages and facebook "likes" I received from my cattle friends throughout the country. It just reaffirms that the reason we're in the cattle business is because of the kind, generous people we get to work with. Sure everyone likes to win, but in the end I'd much rather have friends that I've grown up with and share in the same interests. While I wish I could see them all more (being an adult, watching the show from my office has put a damper on seeing friends) I know that when we meet up at a stock show we'll pick up just where we left off months or years ago! I don't know any other sector of business that has the kind of people the cattle industry holds.

It's Show Day

Yesterday I shared with you the good times we had the MSU Fall Fest sale, and today I'd like to tell you about the heifer we purchased. This morning our new heifer will be shown in Louisville at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), one of the largest cattle shows in the country. Her name is MSU Rachel, was born in February and comes from excellent nationally recognized genetics. We're very excited to watch her show this morning (via Internet) and at the National Western Stock Show (in person). The MSU Purebred Beef Center has been washing and blowing her hair daily in preparation for the sale and upcoming shows. MSU exhibited Angus and Hereford cattle at this show, wish them (and us) the best of luck this morning with the Hereford cattle.

If you are interested in watching the Hereford show or perhaps are interested in what the front-end of a cattle show entails, click here. The NAILE will be streaming the show live. Just a little background... the heifers are shown in their age groups and are lead around the show ring by their owners in front of a judge. The judge evaluates the heifers by looking at their phenotype (body structure, the way the walk, observable characteristics, longevity) and viewing their performance data, which are called E.P.D.s (Expected Progeny Differences) . The judges places them first, second, third, etc. First and second places class winners compete in their division and then champion and reserve divisions compete for overall Grand and Reserve Champion. This is comparable to a beauty pageant:)

Kickin' it in Kansas

JNHE Deadline--> TODAY!

Today is a bittersweet day for me. For the first time in 15 years I am not eligible to submit my Junior National Hereford Expo entries. Another thing that reminds me I'm no longer a "kid" and that in reality I'm without a doubt an adult. The Starr name is not out of the junior division; my sister Danielle will be exhibiting a cow/calf pair and bred heifer. This is a big JNHE for her as she will retire from her three years on the National Junior Hereford Board of Directors at the conclusion of the week-long event.
Even though this will be my first time being a spectator I am fortunate for the all the memorable moments growing up in the program. It all started in 1996 with my first heifer Emily at the Junior National in Des Moines, through the years getting more involved in the contests and PRIDE Convention. As a senior I was elected onto the National Junior Hereford Board of Directors and three years later was able to pass my jacket onto Danielle at the 2008 JNHE in Kansas City. I was also fortunate to be hired as the Youth Activities Intern for American Hereford Association the summer of 2009 and work with Amy Cowan, Youth Activities Director. Looking back at all those hectic years of practicing with my heifer, reciting speeches, calling sponsorships and potential contest judges I was able to get alot into those 15 years. To my own surprise I was even able to finish up my junior career last year in Indiana as a good ole' exhibitor and take in all fun things the JNHE has to offer one last time! It was 15 years of jam-packed fun and meeting some of my best friends across the country.
It made me sad to read NJHA member's Facebook status about submitting online entries by Midnight today. However, I am happy to see that so many other kids are compassionate about the Hereford breed and look forward to the JNHE each summer. I encourage all NJHA members to take advantage of the opportunities available; it will truly have a positive impact on your lifestyle & career as an adult. I know it did for me and I wouldn't trade who I've become for the world!

Day 5--New Boots please!

Fashion, not work boots!

This I'm sure would have to be something I spoil myself with as I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy boots as a gift. A little hard! Boots that are unique make it fun for me to say splurge a bit. Knowing I won't wear these out in the barn; but for going to cattle shows, fun events, out-on-the-town kinda boots!
I own a pair of Corral West Mules, tan with turquoise inlay! Love them, they make such a statement:) Enjoy, please refrain from drooling.

It's Citrus, It's Thirst Quenching....SUN DROP

Sun Drop- Who's heard of it, anyone? For sure my Wisconsin friends have as this is made and primarily sold only in Wisconsin. Now when I hear the word Sun Drop I think back to about 10+ years ago when my sisters and I would drink like it was going out of style at the summer shows. Sitting around the stalls, hanging out with our friends getting a "sugar-buzz" off sun drop and playing practical jokes; oh yeah that what us and we were bad-ass. Our Illinois friends liked it SO much that we started having to pack extra so they was enough to send back with them to "get them through" till the next time we'd reunite! For awhile it was a #1 show necessity, obviously our beverage of choice has changed as we've all gotten older!
