Little Black Dress Challenge

We've all been there. Wasting away an evening with a glass of wine, being suckered in to Pinterest. A spark of motivation hits when you scroll to the "Bikini abs in 30 days", "Flat belly workout" or the "Little Black Dress" workout challenge. It's pinned to the Fitness board, because honestly you will do it. If anything, you're Pinterest followers will believe you're stepping up for game for summer.
Well, a Spartan friend of mine had an idea to make these challenges become a reality. Meaning we actually do them. She put the 30-day challenge of her choice into a group text message to her sister and a friend from Nebraska. Challenge was completed. Word spread. I wanted in, and so did her coworker. Another 30 day challenge was completed. Word spread, more joined. Get the idea? So, this is how it works:
  • Someone in the group finds a workout challenge, shares it in the group text
  • When you're finished each day you text the group "DONE" or words of motivation
  • This encourages everyone else to do the workout scheduled for that day, because you don't want to be that person that doesn't do it!
  • Once the whole challenge is completed, it's up to someone to find a new challenge and more people can join.
Right now there's six of us. From Michigan to Oregon and a few places in between, we're motivating each other daily through our workout challenge text group. A couple I haven't even met and some I know quite well. One has an great blog you'll have to check out: Real World Sara.
Today starts my third challenge, this one is called: Little Black Dress. I'm sharing the schedule we'll be following for the next month. Will you accept the challenge, too?!

Book Review: Lean In

Let's Lean In Togther.

A friend of mine recommended Lean In to me during a work trip a couple months back. The fact that the author, Sheryl Sandberg, was the Chief Operation Officer of Facebook was what initially sparked by interest to read the book. A majority of my career is spent working on social media, so I figured it'd be a good book to stay current on in the ever-changing world of social. HA, little did I know the positive impact, inspiring words and motivation Sandberg would share.
For me, the ticket to a good book is when at random points throughout the day, my mind wonders to the book.... the last chapter I read and what is going to happen next. A lot of ladies have read it in my office and I've managed to weasel it into several conversations. I'd recommend this to every women I know. Sheryl's message is strong and her story is definitely worth sharing. What I appreciate is that she calls it how it is, makes you think back to why you did something and then shares how women can have a seat at every and any table they want. Call me a nerd but I even highlighted certain points that spoke to me and may want to go back and reread.
I snapped an Instagram photo of this book before I turned the first page and my friends, Jamie and Taysha, asked for a review. So ladies, this post was for you and YES-- Go out, buy it and be  ready to be inspired!
Make sure you follow the Lean In Book on Facebook to continue the motivation after you're done with the book. Sheryl has also started a Lean In Community.

At least the wine is delightful

We're freezing. Actually we're beyond freezing. Polar Vortex, arctic blast, the deep freeze. Whatever you want to call it; it's here. In full force! But we're not alone, everyone is in the same situation. Sending warm thoughts to everyone that has to work outside and care for the livestock.
Is there anyone that can relate to this wine glass? I only had to walk to my car after work and even that was enough for me to pour a glass of wine when I got home to warm up! Perhaps you're warming up with something stronger...
Needless to say I haven't gotten too far away from my holiday workout routine.

Holiday Beauty Swap

Tonight I'm linking up with Crystal Cattle for the Holiday Beauty Swap Link Up (while of course, cheering on the Packers in the play offs!). This was my first time participating in any swap and so glad I did. I was paired up with Lacey Jo from Arizona of Calamity Lace. It was fun to be introduced to a new blogger; come to find out we have a lot in common so I'm looking forward to adding another blog to my reading. Now on to the beauty products.
I've been on the hunt for a good lipstick-- essential for completing the look you're going for. Plus I need something that lasts through my 3+ cups of coffee at work. So I was thrilled when I opened the package and found two lip products that I haven't tried yet. First was a Trate lip product that reminded me of the Clinique chubby sticks. It goes on so easily and that it feels like I'm also moisturizing my lips. A must for this frigid Wisconsin weather! The second product was a Christian Dior lip gloss called Dior Addict. A nice gloss that can be worn over a lipstick or by itself. Both products work great with my fair skin tone. THANK YOU, Lacey!! Both were perfect. And I loved the cowboy boot card, perfect for my cowboy boot love affair! Check out Lacey's post to see what she got from me.

Holiday Workout...and repeat

It never fails, I'll be go along all year with a fantastic workout route that I follow religiously... boot camp two times a week, running three times a week. But then I flip the calendar over to December 1st and BAM! It all goes to hell. What is it about December? God love it, but the month goes too fast and we're all running to get everything done before Dec. 25. To-do lists a mile long, juggling end of year at work and baking, brainstorming the perfect gift for cousin it and once you think you have all the shopping done a friend from 10 years back throws you a curve ball and shows up on your doorstep with a nice, thoughtful gift while you stand empty handed. We're all been there. Just admit it.
The holiday parties... love 'em. Love the food, love the people. However, all those calories we consume in cookies, grasshoppers and appetizers don't count, right?! After all they're ALL little bites, no one needs to know how many of those little bits go in our mouths and eventually straight to our highs. Don't get me wrong I love this jolly time of year to slow down and think about what really matters in life. But yikers, I guess that's why the gyms are so packed come January 1.
At least there's one routine that has stayed consistent! Here's to crossing a few things off the Christmas to-do list and turning up your favorite Christmas Pandora station.

Summer 2013: A Beautiful Mess

Took a little summer vacation from blogging. But the good news is I'm back! So far, summer 2013 has lived up to what I was wishing, hoping and praying for!
Pictures are the best way to catch us up on the time that has slipped away. And it just so happens I found a new photo app, it's your lucky day! We've all seen the photos with fun fonts and graphics, where are people pulling these out of? A few nights ago my instagram friend, kmclaflin, had a knock out photo so I bit the bullet and asked, because that's the only way you're going to find out. And you know, people love to share this type of information so next time you're wondering about the latest social media tool, just ask the person, no need to sit and wonder.
kmclaflin responded within minutes and this latest app is my newest addiction and the cheapest ($.99) entertainment I've had since I got a Facebook account in the spring of 2006. Plus is has a fun name, we've all been known to be this from time to time, no not a hot mess but... A Beautiful Mess. Search for it and download it, you won't regret it!

The photo editing portion is like instagram, but on steroids. Once you're done playing art director and by that I mean dolling up your photo with doodles, boarders and text; it's time to share with the world.
Since getting home from kicking butt in my workout class, boot camp, I've been glued to my phone having fun with my summer photos. As you can see the past couple months have been full of travel, sunshine and weddings. Looking forward to August!

There are a ton of photo apps out there, which do you live by for giving followers a sneak peak into your life? Please share.

Update: 101 in 1001

Get out the sharpie.

It's time to scratch a few things off my 101 in 1001 list! I'm tracking OK, but December 2014 will be here in no time. I mean this year is flying, how can it already be time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Here's where I'm at.

Adventure
19. Packers Game. Didn't have tickets, but I tailgated in the Tundra Zone Tent. Let me tell you those people were having just as much fun:)
Intelligence
46. Learn about my family history. Learn a cool fact about my Irish heritage at last week's family reunion/birthday. Sharing this week, stay tuned.
Financial
54. Purchase the iPhone. Yes, I did it and LOVE it. It was totally worth the battle of the cell phone carriers.
Healthy, Beauty and Spirit
69. Pray. It's lent and I'm trying to read the daily devotions/exerpts book that my church gave to each of its members.
Graditude
76. Create a tradition with my godson Isaac. Not sure if this will stick yet, but I did just buy him his second pair of cowboy boots. And each pair has been signed with, "Love, Aunt Nicole". It's a start and could be a nice tradition.
Professional
86. Learn something new that will help my career. I have been doing a lot of social media for work. They're still a lot to learn, but love this new communications/advertising space for clients.

Does anyone else love the accomplished feeling of crossing something off? I do!

Giving Gratitude: Friends in far places

Some people have friends in low places, I have friends in far places. One of my 101 goals in 1001 days is to give gratitude on my blog. Today, I'm thankful for the friends I have. I'm fortunate for the friends I've made in Milwaukee, but today I'm even more grateful for those friends I've met throughout the years (whether it be cattle shows, college or now through social media) and we may not see each other every day or month, but yet are still considered close friends.
Social media has introduced me to a whole new circle of friends I wouldn't have met otherwise. A good example of that is my friend, Jamie Purfeerst of Cows Corn & Country Girls. Jamie and grew up with a similar childhood and now both pursuing agriculture communication type careers. I would have never met Jamie if it weren't for our blogs. I think she may even have been interning at Angus the summer I was at Hereford, small world!
And after meeting her in real life I realized how much fun we could have together! In celebration of her birthday, she's having a giveaway! May be when year 25 rolls around for me I'll have a giveaway in combo with my wish list! Make sure you become one of her followers and enter to win a crafty key chain band. She's quite crafty, too bad she lives so far away, we could have fun making Pinterest DIY crafts or cooking up yummy beef recipes!

Entere here and this homemade key chain could be yours! Drawing is on Friday.

Email Etiquette 101

LPC Workshop Review

A few weeks ago a few Bader Rutter coworkers and I headed to Des Moines for the LPC Regional Workshop, if you recall that trip even included a pit stop at the World's Largest Truck Stop. It's my goal to share a few of the takeaways with you. The first session kicked off with a grammar/sentence structure refresher course with cheat-sheet booklets that I now keep on my desk. Barbara Mack also gave us a friendly email etiquette reminder. Out with the snail mail in with the quick, fast and efficient approach. But just because we're all working in the fast lane doesn't give us any excuse to ease up the gas pedal on professionalism. Follow these simple rules to save time and trouble in organizing your professional life.

  1. There is no privacy in cyberspace. You can no control over emails once you hit "send" And in my situation of working in a open cubicle, collaborative  setting, I've realize there isn't privacy anywhere:)
  2. Use corporate email accounts only for business mail. Don't use your business email account unless you'd make the same communication using company letterhead. Company email = company letterhead
  3. Remember to KISS: Keep It Short and Simple
  4. Use the "subject" line to alert and prepare the reader
  5. Answer all emails promptly.
  6. Proofread.
  7. Share emails and attachments carefully and with permission
  8. Clearly and directly ask for a response or action item, if necessary
  9. Anticipate questions your reader might have and address them.
Stay tuned for the next LPC Regional Workshop Review.

Get the Door! It's Dominos.

More than pizza delivery.

A great new look to a pizza box.
Collector item?!
Without Dominos during college I would have starved. The beef barn, classes and my social life kept me pretty busy, cooking a meal was a pretty low priority. At the time it was much easier to cram for those exams with friends when pizza and beer were involved.
And now I don't feel so guilty, I'm proud to have supported Dominos because they are supporting my family and every animal agriculture operation. Rejecting HSUS and turning to the experts in animal care and behavior was a smart move on their part. I'm glad to see them trust industry professionals and hope other companies follow suite.
When hearing the news, agriculturalists stopped dead in their tracks and headed to pick up a pizza to support a company that supports them. Last weekend was the official AG PIZZA PARTY to show our appreciation. But let the party continue, support a business that wants to work alongside us.
Printable thank you notes from a farmer or rancher are provided, make sure you print it out and give it to your local Dominos. But you don't have to be a farmer, any advocate can show their appreciation to this fine pizza establishment. You can also show your appreciation by giving them a little shout out on Facebook and/or Twitter.

Passing on the Liebster Award Love

Last week Cows, Corn and Country Girls nominated my little blog for the Liebster Award. After reading into it, I learned that it's a little pass-on-the-love-award to upcoming blogs. For someone with a smaller little blog like mine that doesn't even have a cool name for it (on my to-do list, taking suggestions), I was doing back flips and summer salts! What's neat about social media is that it's connected me with people in agriculture, like CCC, we share alot of the same interests and we love sharing our agriculture story (and aren't shy about sneaking in a girly fashion post here & there). I read CCC's blog regularly and feel like we've been friends for a long time, but what's funny is we've only met once! Yes, crazy I know. CCC and I met at the LPC Regional Workshop just a couple weeks ago. I look forward to catching up with her more next time, I have a feeling we could have lots of fun!
Anyways, back to the Liebster Award, this sorta reminds me of the friendship chain letters we did in gradeschool. So please check out the blogs listed below and join their site. And if I recommended your blog, you are to recommend 5 of your favorite blogs in a new post (comment on that person's blog so they're aware) and link back to mine in your post. Please keep this going (If you don't and are supertious it may bring back luck to your blog, ha just kidding)!
  • From Paris with Love- Miss Holli and I met through showing cattle. She was the Hereford Intern one of the years I was serving on the NJHA Board. She never sits still for very long. Read about the exciting travels involved with her family's cattle sale management business and her Simmental cattle.
  • On the Banks of Squaw Creek- Did you know there's more in Iowa than corn, cattle and pigs? Yes, add this blog to your list if interested in learning about turkeys that Katie & her family raise in state-of-the-art barns in central Iowa. Besides raising turkeys and her two children, Katie is also a Common Ground volunteer. I've been fortunate to listen to her speak about Common Ground.
  • Buzzard's Beat- A K-State Wildcat who loves barrel racing & agriculture. Brandi & I both were interns at the NCBA Convention in San Antonio. Even though we don't see each other often, I still enjoy catching up with her through Twitter, Facebook, blogs and the Rockin' Rural Women chats. Buzzard's Beat does a great job of advocating and telling the truth about American agriculture.
  • Pinke Post- A social media friend I hope to meet in person someday! Since joining Pinke Post I've learned what life is like on the North Dakota prairie and how a farm wife/mother survives living hours from a major city. Through her blog and daily instagram photos, Pinke Post does an excellent job of bringing the rural lifestyle to those who've never experienced it.
  • Chronicles of a Lipstick Cowgirl- A country girl who isn't afraid to put on her makeup before heading out the door (my idol!). A busy girl who continues to strive to reach her goals. Melissa just graduated with her Masters, is dedicated to giving back to her community and is a member of Team Beef. She loves to run, maybe we'll meet half way between WI and KS for a 5 or 10K. Looking for a make-over? She your gal for all your Mary Kay needs.
The last part of the Liebster Award is for me to share 5 random facts with my readers.
  1. I've been driving the same car since I was 16. The trusty red Grand Prix is still going strong:)
  2. For as much as I love Packers and as close as I live to Lambeau Field, I only been to one game in my entire life.
  3. I'm allergic to shell fish. But it doesn't bother me too much because I LOVE BEEF!
  4. I have a dent in my head. Don't know why, parents took me to lots of doctors. We've come to the conclusion it's from when my mom broke her elbow doing chores while prego with me. She had to rest the cast somewhere.
  5. Went to college for 4 years, party at cattle shows and yet I still can't take a whole shot of liquor. I don't know what's wrong with me, perhaps I should go back to school to learn how.
Add these new blogs to your list and continue to pass on the love.

Friday Flair: Clinique

What beauty products do you use?

Warning to the men readers: This may not be something you find extremely worthy of a post, but trust me to us ladies it's a big deal!
Last night's Rockin' Rural Women twitter & facebook chat on health and fitness reminded me of the beauty chat we had a few months ago monitored by my friend, Crystal Cattle, who's getting married this weekend! Anyways, it was those lovely ladies that I "chatted" with that convinced me to make the switch to Clinique. And I've never been happier with my skin. Customer service is huge to me and the ladies in the white lab coats behind the counter at Macys took the time to really get to know me, my skin and listened to what I look for in a skincare product. Here the are the products that work for me, but visit with the professionals to discover what would be best for you.

After a day at the office and evening run; taking the day off of my face is a refreshing way to wind down for the evening.

Step 1: Take the Day Off (literally), Eye Makeup Remover

Step 2: Liquid Soap- This mild soap leaves my face free from makeup residues, shinny and refreshed. I also like that is caters to my sensitive skin.

Step 3: Using a cotton square, apply a small amount of this lotion over
 your clean, shinny, refreshed face.
Step 4: This moisturizing gel will leave your skin feeling elastic, moisturized, yet not greasy.

Step 5: Some say I'm young, I say I have a birthday quickly approaching (and it's not my 21st!). No matter what your age you should take a proactive approach to caring for your skin. This eye cream prevents wrinkles and leaves your eye area feeling and looking young. (Crows-feet scare me!!)

Lastly, no matter what your age you may get a little breakout here and there, depending on how busy you are at work or school, stress levels or the amount of Easter chocolate consumed (I can relate to all 3!) Just put a little dab of this gel on that zit or pimple and you'll be ready to take on the day!

That's my nightly and morning skincare routine! For makeup I'm a MAC and Mary Kay girl. However, there's lots of skincare and beauty lines out there, what do you use? I'd love to hear what you've found to work!

Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Tradeshow

2012 Convention at the Gaylord Opryland

As a senior in college I had the opportunity to intern for National Cattlemen's Beef Association during the annual Cattle Industry Convention and Tradeshow when the convention was in San Antonio. Talk about an excellent opportunity for a student to experience. Business from pasture to plate of the beef industry are represented in the tradeshow. Behind the scenes of the tradeshow cattle producers have the opportunity to attend meeting sessions and a Cattlemen's College, both equipping attendees with the tools & equipment to become more knowledgeable for the industry we are all passionate about. As producers, it is important that we are always looking for new ways to provide safe, wholesome and nutritious beef to our consumers. Just think back to how efficient we have gotten utilizing our resources to keep up with the growing demand of our product? Just today I saw a twitter post that said hamburger from a single steer will make about 720 quarter-pounders! As a producer, that is something we can all be proud of!
While I'm sad I won't be joining in on the Gaylord Opryland fun with my friends at the NCBA Convention (part of me isn't sad, I'm looking forward to a fun trip out west coming soon... stay tuned), I will be keeping up with all the NCBA Convention updates via twitter by following the hashtag #CIC12.

Follow Me on Pinterest

And RePin what you like

Like the thousands of other people in this social media world, I also jumped on the Pinterest bandwagon in the fall of 2011 and consider myself hooked on pinning! This virtual pinboard allows you to bookmark the recipes, DIY crafts & party planning ideas you like and "pin" it to a designated board you've created for that topic area. Like facebook, you can follow your friends to see what they've pinned and repin to one of your boards. It's the greatest invention ever, a lot of the stuff is to creative, imaginative and you'll find yourself saying "why didn't I think of that?"!
This fall I got rather addicted, spending my noon hour and evenings cruising the site! Part of it is like going on a shopping spree, but never having to swipe the Visa or Mastercard. This year it's my goal to do a better job of organizing my boards and making them look more complete and appealing to my friends. You can follow me at: nstarr
Here's a look at my boards and the categories I've created.

A few on my favorite recipes were the lasagna soup and tuscan tomato basil pasta, these two recipes freeze really well too!
This winter I really hope to make this DIY throw into a comforter for my bed, check it out. What color do you suggest? I'm thinking purple.

And as much as I'm dreading it, Valentine's Day is right around the corner. I think this hugs & kisses wreath would look cool on the house. Maybe the DIY crafty spell will hit me and I'll crank it out this weekend since I plan on staying in Milwaukee.

The ideas, options and possibilities are endless with Pinterest. If you've on it remember to follow me at: nstarr. If you're not a member of Pinterest and would like to, leave your personal email address below and I'll send you an invite.

Happy Pinning!

Worldwide InstaMeet Day

Capture your day

Today is Worldwide InstaMeet Day. Are any of you on Instagram? If so what comment below how I can find you, follow me at starrnicole. This is one of my favorite (I don't have many) apps on my iPod touch. It's a great way to capture and share with others the crazy exciting things I encounter throughout my day. When I'm not traveling I use it to share my random thoughts, funnies or something I feel is just worth sharing with my Instagram friends. It's also easy to upload to Facebook or Twitter.
In honor of this special day and the ever so popular Wordless Wednesday I thought I'd share today's Instagram pictures.
My Hereford coffee cup is one of my many signature items in the office.
I quoted the picture by saying, "Coffee and #Hereford #Cattle... two things that get me going in the morning."
Snapshots of your footsteps is a great way to express who you are. In this case, my need for coffee and love for Hereford cattle.
It was a great day for my decoupage pumpkins; out of the blue I had two co-workers come up to me and place an order. Erin bought a red & white paisley for her Grandma and Zach eyed up the black & white paisley for his girlfriend. These will make excellent Halloween gift! So... to show my enthusiasm and thrill I shared this post via twitter (ps- my handle is: @nstarrgirl).

Expecting in return, I got this response from  my new twitter friend, Jane Graves (@ImnNvp2B)

Would love to meet you someday Jane! Who know maybe we can at least bounce ideas off each other!I look forward to connecting and getting to know in the future.
So long story short by sharing my daily thoughts and adventures via Instagram I ended my day with a new friend through Social Media. How has social media helped you reach out to people?
