Book Review: Lean In

Let's Lean In Togther.

A friend of mine recommended Lean In to me during a work trip a couple months back. The fact that the author, Sheryl Sandberg, was the Chief Operation Officer of Facebook was what initially sparked by interest to read the book. A majority of my career is spent working on social media, so I figured it'd be a good book to stay current on in the ever-changing world of social. HA, little did I know the positive impact, inspiring words and motivation Sandberg would share.
For me, the ticket to a good book is when at random points throughout the day, my mind wonders to the book.... the last chapter I read and what is going to happen next. A lot of ladies have read it in my office and I've managed to weasel it into several conversations. I'd recommend this to every women I know. Sheryl's message is strong and her story is definitely worth sharing. What I appreciate is that she calls it how it is, makes you think back to why you did something and then shares how women can have a seat at every and any table they want. Call me a nerd but I even highlighted certain points that spoke to me and may want to go back and reread.
I snapped an Instagram photo of this book before I turned the first page and my friends, Jamie and Taysha, asked for a review. So ladies, this post was for you and YES-- Go out, buy it and be  ready to be inspired!
Make sure you follow the Lean In Book on Facebook to continue the motivation after you're done with the book. Sheryl has also started a Lean In Community.

Slow down and think

Think before you speak.

We've all heard it. Don't gossip, if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. Easier said than done at times. Especially when you get caught up in the hustle of work, are passionate about a certain topic or have have just flat out had enough.....A great mentor of mine once said "My give a shit meter is busted!" LOVE IT!
So when I can across this today on the Rockin' Rural Women page it reminded me to slow down and really think before I spill. And those that have ever dealt with me on a regular basis know I'm guilty of saying whatever is one my mind at the given moment. You never have to wonder what's going on in this brain of mine.
Thanks RRW for the good reminder for all of us to TRY to follow, once in a while, when our Give-a-Shit Meter is working:)

Giving Gratitude: Friends in far places

Some people have friends in low places, I have friends in far places. One of my 101 goals in 1001 days is to give gratitude on my blog. Today, I'm thankful for the friends I have. I'm fortunate for the friends I've made in Milwaukee, but today I'm even more grateful for those friends I've met throughout the years (whether it be cattle shows, college or now through social media) and we may not see each other every day or month, but yet are still considered close friends.
Social media has introduced me to a whole new circle of friends I wouldn't have met otherwise. A good example of that is my friend, Jamie Purfeerst of Cows Corn & Country Girls. Jamie and grew up with a similar childhood and now both pursuing agriculture communication type careers. I would have never met Jamie if it weren't for our blogs. I think she may even have been interning at Angus the summer I was at Hereford, small world!
And after meeting her in real life I realized how much fun we could have together! In celebration of her birthday, she's having a giveaway! May be when year 25 rolls around for me I'll have a giveaway in combo with my wish list! Make sure you become one of her followers and enter to win a crafty key chain band. She's quite crafty, too bad she lives so far away, we could have fun making Pinterest DIY crafts or cooking up yummy beef recipes!

Entere here and this homemade key chain could be yours! Drawing is on Friday.

Birthday Wish #4--> A house that's MINE

For the Home I Don't Own.

If you follow me on Pinterest you may have see my board titled "For the Home I Don't Own". Still being somewhat young and renting, at times I haven't moved out of that college transitional housing mode. Ya know? Someday I hope to have a big farm house and can decorate it, for now Pinterest will have to do. However I am having fun getting some ideas, and hey a girl can always dream...

Unfortunately I'm having troubles inserting the pictures of my dream house... Please check out my board to see today's birthday wish! One item i repinned from my friend, Holli Hatmaker, she has a great blog called From Paris with Love.

I think my Vera Bradley bags would fit in nicely:)

1001 days from now I'll have........

101 in 1001 goals

As you know from my 3 in 30 monthly challenges, I'm a goal-driven individual. As odd as it may sound, I think I get some sort of emotional high off of checking this off my to-do list. Whether work or personal life, I have a handwritten (usually never-ending) list that I'm plugging along at and living for the moment when I can take a hot pink highlighter and cross it off as complete! In a way it makes sense, from little on I've been the kind of person that's not only working in the present, but also planning for the future.
With that, I've decided to take on a larger goal challenges, 101 goals in 1001 days. Start date was on Sunday, April 1, 2012 (no not an April Fool's joke), with a completion date of Sunday, December 28, 2014. It seems so far away, but yet it also seems like just yesterday I was graduating from Michigan State and entering the real world, hard to believe I've been a MSU alumni for 2 years!
Anyways, I'm excited to see where these 1001 days take me, hopefully I'll get to do a little traveling and knock a few things off my bucket list. Here are some of my favorites, but please see all of them on the '101 Things to do in 1001 Day' tab or by click here.

Travel
  • Go to the Kentucky Derby. Yes that right, watch it on TV the first weekend of every May. I'm actually a "Southern Bell" at heart. I would love to get dressed up and wear a big, fancy hat and take in that high-dollar horse racing vibe. And maybe do a little horse betting!
Adventure
  • Sailboat ride. Just to say I have and because I've never been.
  • Meet the Pioneer Women. Yep, I'm sure you're not surprised, I'm a huge fan! And to get my cookbooks signed, pretty please. Hint Hint... my birthday is in a little over a month and I still don't own cookbook #2....
Gratitude
  • Give back to an organization that was good to me and got me to where I am today. Looking forward to this one!
Professional
  • Attend a new agriculture event. It's always good to expand your horizons and learn a little something new about the industry we love!
Don't forget to check out the rest of the 101 in 1001 list, it's quite the list and I had fun putting it together. What will you accomplish this April? I'm hoping for a little spring cleaning:)

Wordless Wednesday: 3in30 Goals

I don't know about you, but this week is cruising here in Southwest, WI! What I'm not happy about is this yucky late winter/early spring weather. Rain, sleet, snow oh my! Make up your mind mother nature. I'm secrectly hoping we bypass spring and head straight into capri and flip flop weahter! Pretty please!? Happy to report that February was a successful month (perhaps because there was an extra day?!) with the goals listed off to the right!! Complete, Complete and Complete! I've captured my accomplishments, take a look, the pictures are worth a thousand words.

#1- Read The Help

A book that I originally started on my vacation to California 6 months ago, picked it back up again on my work-trip to California and completed!! What did you all think of the movie? I do plan on watching it.
Goal #2- Spread the #iheartbeef love.
The American Heart Association has declared February heart awareness month. To promote beef as part of a heart-healthy diet the NCBA also joined forces in this campaign, by featuring I Heart Beef. I spread the love by purchasing this cooler bag from the California Cattlemen's Assocition and agvocated. A few of this month's healthy beef advocate posts:
Goal #3- Make Someone's Day
I made this X-O Valentine wreath for my mom, so happy with how it turned out. It is currently hanging on the front of our house, but today it comes down to be stored for next year. What do I have in the works for St. Patrick's Day? Check back! You can find instructions on my Pinterest Board. Mom didn't want to be in the picture w/me:( Boo.
I love sending care packages and being able to brighten some else's day. My GREAT Aunt Sally and sister, Danielle were the lucky recipients of a Valentine package complete with strawberry cookie (cream cheese frosting filling) sandwiches and a handwritten note. Remember you're never to tech savy for a handwritten note, I find it much more meaningful than an email (plus my Aunt Sally isn't on email!). We're been pen pals since well.... before I could write!

What do you plan on crossing off your list in March in between all the March-Madness games!??

A Green Bay loss, Kenosha win

What a weekend! First off I spend the last few days in Denver, CO for the National Western Stock Show, more exciting details on that cattle event to come tomorrow. However here’s a little teaser.

Besides my trip west, Wisconsin had a roller coaster ride of a weekend. To my surprise as I was checking my Facebook Sunday morning on my ride to the airport, I learned that Miss Wisconsin WON the Miss America title at the pageant in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Saturday night I was pretty wrapped up in the NWSS fun and didn’t even realize the pageant was happening, let alone the fact Miss Wisconsin was in the hunt! Congrats to Miss Wisconsin and her family! I can’t remember if Miss Wisconsin has ever won the pageant? Looking forward to watching the new Miss America throughout 2012, perhaps she’ll be an agriculture advocate like the 2011 Miss America? I can only hope!

Now for the let down… oh my poor Packers! Like any other Wisconsinite, I’m a huge fan. All my Sundays have consisted on cheering on the green and gold and of course bragging about our 15-1 record. Today has been pretty quite around the office as far as “Packer talk” goes. I think we are still mourning our loss. Green Bay still has the best fans and we’ll be ready for next season!

I know it’s January 16th and my November 3 in 30 goals are still up. November feels like so long ago (well I guess it was) I don’t even know if I completed them! So here’s to a new thought… 3 in 15! That’s right, still participating however with less time. We’ll see how I do!

  • Workout 4x/week. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to get into shape. Heck, I’m paying for the YMCA membership might as well use it! I also hope to do a few classes such as: Body Attack (yikes), Zumba and Sunrise Yoga (hope I can get out of bed).
  • Eat Healthy. No Sweets. For those that know me well you are aware of my sweet tooth. Are you seeing a theme here? I am trying to stick to a diet! I’ve found myself putting horrible (but oh so delightful) foods into my mouth, I use to be so well behaved, what’s happened?!
  • Wake up at 6 am 4x/week. This past year I’ve become a complete snoozer! I shouldn’t need all this extra sleep, what happened to the days of functioning on just a few hours of sleep? (I miss college!) Don’t worry, I’ll let you know what I accomplish during this one hour, it use to be consumed by me being snug as a bug in my warm bed.
Looking forward to getting back to the grind stone and crossing a few things off my never ending to-do list. Did you see my Instagram post earlier today? #runningoutoftime

What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

November #3in30

Goals.

As you can tell October wasn't a good 3in30 goal month for me! OOPS! I will say October was full of pumpkin decoupaging, a trip to Michigan and Kansas City and more pumpkin decoupaging! A fun fall month, but everyday being reminded how cold it is getting and BAM here we are at the first of November! It seems like we are just recovering from the holidays last year! Here's the November line up, check out the #3in30 website for goal setting advice and to encourage the weekly featured #3in30 guest.

  • Clean out my car- That means clean out the junk, vacuum, wipe down the inside. Get it good and clean from hood to truck!
  • Knit two scarves- I finished my first scarf/muff and it's soo adorable! My next one is started, hopefully my Aunt Jo and I will be able to crank out two!
  • Use my YMCA membership 3x/week- I'm paying for it so better use it. Enough said!
Hopefully I'll get this and much more completed during the busy hectic November and pre-rush of the holiday craziness!

STARR Student:)

You heard right!!

Happy to announce that I successfully completed all my June #3in30 goals that I set for myself. It's happened only a few months that I've been able to successfully cross these off my to-do list. Here's the run down.

  • Blog Update: Thank you for putting up with my blog while under a complete construction zone. However I'm proud of the renovation work that was done. After my internship at AHA, Amy Cowan gave me this Hereford hide image and am soo glad I finally put it to good use.
  • My N is painted and on display in my cute little cubical space. Promise to post a picture tomorrow. As you can image there's a lot of pink, polka-dots, flowers and even glitter:) Yes a lot of thought went into this painting project.
  • As of tonight I successfully worked out 3x each week this month. I started taking yoga on Monday nights at Bader Rutter. I have occupied my time on the remaining nights by going to the YMCA and using my Nike + System I received for my birthday. Happy to say I'm putting a lot of  mileage on these new tennis shoes with the fancy sensor.
Check out my July goals on the right --->>>>. What have you set out to complete this month?

#3in30 Feature Guest Post

Sorry for my absence this week it's just been one of those weeks. However I've been ecstatic about the warm 0% humidity and have been spending every waking moment (when not at the office) outside. After the gym I usually go for a little walk around my little subdivision and then eat my supper (and breakfast for that matter) out on my patio over looking a huge lawn (that I never mow!) and tennis court.

Anyways last week I jumped the gun alittle and said I was the #3in30 feature guest post. Well silly Blondie me I got my Wednesday mixed up! It's actually today that I was the featured post. To learn more about it please click here and you'll be transferred to last week's post that's give all the details. And to see my actual feature post on the #3in30 website click here.

Happy Wednesday:)

Check it out!

A #3n30 guest TODAY!

As you all have noticed I've taken on the #3n30 monthly challenge whole heartily! Via Twitter and blog I've found this challenge has really fit me and my goal-orienting needs. Each month (since February or March, can't exactly remember) I've selected three goals that needed attention. Simple things to cleaning out my closets to more complex tasks such as completing the Masters of Beef Advocacy course. The challenge has been an excellent asset to me as I adjust to my working lifestyle. I've gotten things crossed off my list that were back burner type items. For me there's no better feeling then scratching things off my monthly to-do list three at a time.
Last week on Twitter #3n30 asked for quotes on how the 3n30 program has affected it's participants. Within just hours of submitting I received a reply from the coordinator asking ME to be a featured participant on the blog. And it just so happens that today it the day!! Today only you'll be able to read my bio and quote as the featured participant. This is a great honor and I'm thrilled to have been selected.
I encourage all my readers to take on this challenge. See what you can knock out in just 30 days! You'll see that I've even added my June #3n30 goals to my blog as a daily reminder and to hold myself accountable throughout the month for the goals selected.

Friday Find-->#3in30 Resource Page

Encouragement, Accountability, and Community

This week's Friday Find is short! Sorry!! Busy Friday here on my end! Anyways, as you know I'm addicted to the #3in30. I love crossing this off my To-Do list and focusing on 3 goals each month and shockingly allowed me to accomplish quite a bit!
This week via Twitter I learned the founders created a resource page to help followers meet goals they commit to throughout the year. Check out the site, anyone is able to suggest categories through commenting on the website. And by the end of the weekend I'll have my June #3in30 goals posted on my blog as a daily reminder to get cracking!!
Wish my family luck tomorrow-another Saturday at the Crosscut Solution Greenhouse. Tomorrow's special is Tough Enough to Plant Pink! A $20 registration fee allows to plant pink flowers with your friends, PINK gardening gloves all while supporting Breast Cancer Awareness. Swing by Crosscut Solutions.

3 in 30 Update

If you haven't noticed I LOVE the 3 in 30 method! Whoever thought of it is an absolute genius! It has allowed me to complete goals and enjoy the thrill of crossing them of the list. I'm a list maker, stick to my to-do list kinda girl. April brought several trip to Manawa, a fun trip back to E. Lansing, a fun Easter and this weekend a fun visit with Aunt Sally, opening day of the Crosscut Solutions Greenhouse and Mom's birthday!

Here's my month recap:
I DID finish my Lenten book provided by my church, enjoyed it! I'm happy to say I was very loyal to it.
I DID do some spring cleaning by organizing my closets and donated unwanted clothes to Goodwill. It's amazing how much was can accumulate.
I WAS very good this month at attending the YMCA. I looking forward to continuing this well into May:)

Here's what I hope to accomplish in May:
-Organize the files on my computer along with my personal e-mail account. I know there's some college class e-files in here that are no longer of any use. And my e-mail has been screaming in red letters that I am at my 96% capacity. YIKES!
-You can look forward to my blog getting a facelift (last one promise) I think you'll like what I got cookin' in my mind!
-Get up early and work-out before going into the office! While I like my sleep, there's no reason I can't workout prior to, plus I hear working out in the morning is more effective. There's these morning classes, Fab Abs and Sunrise Yoga, that I really want to give a try!

What are you planning on accomplishing this month? I think it's important to always spice up your goals and try something new:)
PS-May is my birthday month! Can't wait to share with you my Birthday Wish-List Countdown! Stay tuned:)

Try This..... 31 Ways to be a Better Person

Today is gorgeous sunny day! It puts me in such a happy go-lucky mood! After my walk around Bishop's Woods near my office I'm fully charged to take on the the afternoon. The sunshine puts everyone in a much better mood and I find people are more apt to do a good deed. Today I found this article: 31 ways to be a better person; read it and see if there's something you do throughout your day. Remember little things go along ways too! Enjoy the 60* weather we are having:)

31 Ways to be a Better Person
1.Pick up a piece of trash at the beach. It won't kill you.
2.Teach someone something new. Human interaction speaks louder than Google.
3.Shop in a new store. Break your routine. Never know who you'll run into.
4.Go grab a drink by yourself. See how comfortable you are in your own skin and how well you handle "traffic."
5.Donate something to a person who truly needs it.
6.Have an opinion and know how to express it without offending.
7.Pick one topic per week and learn about it. Have something to bring to a conversation.
8.Offer before someone has to ask.
9.Discover a new area.
10.For one day, keep all negative comments to yourself.
11.Be a leader not a preacher. Set a good example and don't mention it.
12.Look people in the eye as you pass them on the street. Smile.
13.Learn about your co-workers.
14.Surprise someone with a gift. Make their day.
15.Leave your "baggage" at home. Negativity breeds negativity.
16.Be inquisitive. Ask others questions about them without waiting for your turn to speak.
17.The big stuff is obvious, remember the little things. They often matter the most.
18.Cook, build or make something from scratch. Even if it tastes bad, looks bad or falls apart, you did it yourself and you'll do better next time.
19.Facebook, e-mail or write a hand-written letter. If someone acknowledges you, acknowledge them back.
20.Make a list and accomplish one thing you've been putting off each week.
21.Set goals. Write them down. Achieve them because you can!
22.Listen more. Talk less.
23.Remember that when you have a rough day, you're not the only one.
24.Be aware of your surroundings.
25.Make someone else's problem your problem and do your best to help.
26.Be incredibly nice to everyone for one whole day.
27.Own up to your mistakes and deal with the consequences immediately. Move on.
28.Cut the drama out of your life.
29.Take initiative. Don't wait to be told to do something.
30.Be a hard worker for yourself, but have confidence that others take notice.
31.Make time to live life and stop going through the motions of just living.

How do you make a difference? Do you have anything to add to this list??? Please share:)

April's 3 in 30

What a totally lazy, but also productive weekend. It's Sunday morning a little after 9 I'm awake, but can't get myself out of bed! At this rate I'm hoping to just get ready and go to church this morning.
I know we are already 3 days into April, but I needed to take some time to think about what I was going to cross off the list this month.
Goal #1: Read my little Catholic Black Book: Little black books are passed out at our church at the beginning on Advent and Lent each year. Each day of Lent has a six minute reading and reflection on the Gospel (right-hand page) and the left hand page has a variety of quotes, info and timely thoughts. It's small (pocket-sized) and can travel anywhere; a great Lenten act.
Goal #2: April is Spring Cleaning!: And yes, I'll admit I'm a pack-rat (says the girl who threw out 10+ garbage bags of Junk from her room at home!). So in an effort to not have to go through that again I will be cleaning and donating clothes I no longer wear or need. I will be doing this at my place in Milwaukee and unfortunately my room at home too! Also doing a little cleaning here at my condo so I'm not accumulating too much unnecessary junk!
Goal #3: Use my YMCA Membership 3x/week (4 would be best!): This is a goal that wasn't completed from March so it's making a second appearance! I love the Y, last month was just too crazy and hello.... Swim suit season is fast approaching and I really want to hang out the at beach on Lake Michigan! I guess a healthy diet fits into this goal as well.... Damn March girl scout cookies! (Ok it was a rough month!)
Happy Sunday!!
Plans??

MBA Graduate!! / 3 in 30 Update

Get the cap and gown out...... I'm an MBA Graduate! No just kidding. But really I am so proud that I can finally say I have competed this. It program developed while in college and just didn't have time to start so got put on the "After I graduate from college" list. I happy to hear that Michigan State now incorporates the MBA program into the Advanced Feedlot course. It's great so many MSU students are graduating with their MBA. I am looking forward to getting the MBA Graduate reception material in the mail and being associated with the MBA graduate networking site. Even better is that I now have the resources and am equipped to share with producers and consumers the true facts about beef production. I look forward to having discussion about how beef is raised, the environmental factors that producers follow and the nutrition your body will experience by incorporating beef into a well balanced diet. Producers are continuing to provide you with a product that is safe, whole and delicious. More to come!!
Now for a 3 in 30 update.........
1) Clean my car.... CHECK! Pfizer clients came into town earlier this month and I purposely volunteered to be the cab driver so I was encouraged to give my car the cleaning attention it needed. Vacuuming, cleaning, wiping, reorganizing of the grand prix needs to be a must every month!!
2) Work out three times/week. FAIL FAIL FAIL!! Sorry. I will be giving this another try in April. I have gone to the YMCA twice this week. Weekend plans are not final yet, so may be getting in a couple more days!! I NEED IT:)
3) Complete MBA Course..... CHECK!!! Yes completed as of 30 minutes ago! And boy does it feel good to complete this. As I stated above I'm ecstatic to start blogging about what I have learned from this program in future posts. Stay tuned.
Working on my April 3 in 30 Goals? What are your April 3 in 30??
Today is the last day of March! How did it fly??? Excited for the start of April, hoping for lots of sun, green grass and the excitement of warm weather!!:)

3 in 30 Update- 1/2 Point Reached

Where has the month of March gone? For me it has been keeping busy with work, throwing a baby shower and getting ready for the NJHA Board to come to our house. Can't wait for the NJHA Board arrive tomorrow! I hope you all enjoy taking in St. Patrick's Day Wisconsin style, touring Genex Cooperative, and have productive planning meetings. I really thought I would be doing better on my 3 in 30, my evenings have been taken up by running errands for mom and baking for the shower. Evening and weekends are never long enough. I had high hopes for myself when I announced My Month of March: 3 in 30 Challenge. Ok, enough with the excuses, here's my report. (There's still time for a turnaround!) Goal 1: Clean my car, clean leather, vacuum & take through the car wash. Cha-Ching 100% complete and scratched off my list. Clients were coming into the office for planning meetings and I purposely volunteered to be the airport taxi driver. I need to keep this as a monthly habit. Goal 2: Finish the Masters of Beef Advocacy. I'm getting there and will finish. Luckily Marth is a long month. I have two sections to go! On my way to being a MBA Graduate by April 1st. Goal 3: Use my YMCA membership 3x/week. FAILING :( I'm embarrassed, but my time has been spent ready ready for all the fun company and parties in March. I worked out 3x the first week, but not the last two weeks. And I can feel it, my body aches when I slack. So to make up for it I'm going to do double time: work out 6x/week the last two weeks in March. Happy Earily St. Patty's Day, Don't forget to wear your GREEN! N.Starr

My month of March: 3 in 30 Challenge

Happy 1st day of March! So many great things happening..... St. Patty's Day, Spring begins, Lent, more calves being born, daylight savings time, green grass and most likely one last snow storm. I think it's also a time when our New Year's Resolutions begin to slip because we getting so-so ever close to warm weather! To keep on track of my goals I will be participating in the 3 in 30 challenge. My good friend Crystal Cattle participated awhile back, and me being the type A, goal oriented, to-do list type person I found this to be right up my alley. You may find my goals odd, but they desperately need checking off the ole goal list this month. Goal 1. Clean my car- vacuum, clean leather & windows, take a trip through the car wash. I seriously don't know what has happened to me, but from the inside it looks like I'm a traveling gypsy or trying to convert my Grand Prix into a Motor Home. Needless to say something has to be done.... I'm embarrassed to offer to drive. Goal 2. Finish the Masters of Beef Advocacy. I am currently in the middle of Course 3 (6 courses total). This will be my most challenging of my goal; it'll be tight but I'm going to keep plowing through.
Goal 3. Use my YMCA Membership 3x/week. While I have been doing well, I could be doing better. This is my final goal as I have a feeling this month is going to be crazy busy with going back home three weekends in a row for fun festivities!
I will provide an update in the middle of the month! Wish me luck, what are your goals this month?
Please note: With a new month comes a new poll. Sadly to say I will not be spring breaking it this year. Yes, being an adult is hard at times. However I can still dream about my ultimate vaca! Make sure to cast your vote by the end of the month and check back to see which destination wins!
Happy Tuesday & cheers for a successful March
N. Starr
